What SHOULD Happen in ‘The Fate of the Furious’

This weekend, the highly anticipated The Fate of the Furious comes out, the eighth (that’s right, eight!) film in the Fast and Furious franchise.  The film is directed by F Gary Gray (The Italian Job (2003), Straight Outta Compton (2015)) and stars familiar faces Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, and adds Charlize Theron as the villain.

From watching the trailers, the movie is going to be just as epic, ridiculous, and fun as past Fast films, only this time, there is a nice twist.  The trailers show that Dominic Toretto (Diesel), the groups proverbial leader, has turned on his “family” and is now teamed up with Cipher (Theron).  Why is he doing this?  Dom has always been about family first and now he turns his back on them?  It makes no sense, right?  Well, maybe not.  I am going to explain to you on what I think could, and should, happen in The Fate of the Furious.

At the end of the Furious 7 (2015), the gang defeated Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) and everything was perfect.  This was also when Brian O’Connor (the late Paul Walker) decided to hang it up and start a normal, safe life with Mia (Jordana Brewster) and their son, with another child on the way, far away from all the violence and chaos.  The movie ended with a beautiful, heartfelt farewell to Brian, Mia, and more importantly, Paul Walker.

But was this really the end of Brian and Mia O’Connor?

So let’s say O’Connor drove off into the sunset and he and Mia are living happily ever after, while the crew continues to be vigilante outlaws working for the government.  Who could be the one person that could find the crew the easiest?  Who is a the one person who would be able to find the backgrounds of each and every person in the crew?  Who is the one person who would be able to find Brian and Mia if they tried to vanish and go into hiding?

The answer: A cyber terrorist.  And, according to Mr. Nobody (Russell), Cipher is “the very definition of high-tech terrorism.”  She’s the best and most dangerous out there and can get her hands on anything she wants.

So how does this all add up?  Check it out, in The Fate of the Furious, Cipher has kidnapped Brian, Mia, and their kids.  She then forces Dominic Toretto to turn against his team and help her complete whatever mission she needs to complete, or else she will kill Brian, Mia, and the children.  Dom is all about family, but for his sister Mia, Brian – the closest thing he’s ever had to a brother – and his niece and nephew, it is definitely plausible that he could turn his back on the team for actual family.

Also, in Trailer #2, Cipher tells Dom, “I think I need to remind you why you chose to be here.” which then cuts to Dom staring at a cross emblem on a necklace and then cuts to him cocking a gun and pointing it a Cipher’s head yelling, “I GOT NO CHOICE!”  This situation, of Brian and Mia being kidnapped, would put Dom in an impossible situation and he would have to do what he has to do to keep them safe.

So what happens to Dom in the end?  This might sound insensitive, but it’s really not.

Dom has completed his mission with Cipher and Hobbs (Johnson) and the rest of the gang are beaten down and depleted.  Dom thinks he is done and Brian and Mia can be go free, until he finds out that Cipher has in fact killed Brian, Mia, and their family, causing Dom to snap, rally the group together, kill or capture Cipher and get back together, even with Brian and Mia being gone, or something of that nature.  Is this dark?  Absolutely.  Insensitive, seeing as Paul Walker has passed away?  Definitely not.  Sure, Brian is out of the group and he and Mia are living a wonderful life somewhere in California, I assume.  They aren’t going into hiding and they aren’t dropping off the face of the earth, seeing as Dom and the rest of the crew will probably want contact of some sort.  This would be the official end to Brian and Mia’s storyline (though Mia has become irrelevant the last few movies).

Also, a scene like this, of Dom finding out what has happened to Brian and Mia, would add such an emotional weight and power to not only the film, but the series.  There really hasn’t been any emotion to these movies, save for the farewell to Paul Walker at the end of Fast 7 (2015), but that didn’t really have anything to do with the plot.  But nothing of this magnitude has happened in the series, and if anyone can pull it off, it is director F Gary Gray, who made us sympathize with rap group N.W.A in Straight Outta Compton and would be able to handle this with class and powerful filmmaking.

So yeah, that’s what I think should happen in The Fate of the Furious.  Will it happen?  Maybe.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.
